Painted in 2003, it is now in a great home and is being cared for lovingly. Like the previous post, this one has some sentiment attached to it as well. I dedicated it to Gil Stone, my painting instructor at the School of Visual Arts who I studied with back in the 70's. While I was working on this piece, I learned that Gil had not survived that era and had been gone for many years. It came as a shock to me and I ended up corresponding with some old friends and students of his regarding his life and work while I was working on this piece. It's painted at dusk, the bow is pointed out into the bay and there's no one at the wheel- Just the way I was feeling.

Snow on the Poe House

Just sold this piece last week and I've got mixed feelings about letting it go. Created in 2002, this painting was the first piece I did after several years of absence from painting due to illness, so it has a special meaning for me. I spent way too much time on it, and it has some obsessive compulsive tendencies, but now it has a new home and I have to let it go. I've been working on some new pieces lately and my mind is set on them.

Trekell Brush Artists

Here's a a video Trekell brushes created that shows artists at work with their brushes. I pulled over in the deep fog to read the historical marker and stood underneath this old tree for quite some time. The marker reads as follows:
"In 1938, in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the United States Constitution, the Virginia Daughters of the American Revolution sponsored the planting of Constitution Forest in this area. With the help of the Civilian Conservation Corps and the United States Forest Service, the memorial forest commemorates the Virginia framers of the Constitution. In 1987, the 45 acres of red and white pine seedlings have matured to a forest that provides protection for birds and other wildlife as well as for the watershed of the James River."

St. Michael's Church Show

Here's the announcement for my current show which opened on Friday night the 9th of April. We had an excellent turnout and had to send out for more wine. The show will run through May 7th and showcases 6 new paintings, two recent paintings and one from the permanent collection at home. St. Michael's church has an ongoing artist exhibition schedule and invited me to show for the month of April. The church is at 8706 Quaker Lane in Bon Air, Virginia.

Crossroads

Crossroads is the first image in a series of paintings I just completed. This lonely old building sits on the edge of a pasture at the intersection of two county roads that stretch away in either direction outside of Lexington, VA. I knew when I saw it that I liked this old store or filling station as they used to be called. I look at the chimney and can imagine the smoke curling out of there on a freezing winter morning, I look at the space underneath the covered porch and wonder how a car could ever pull in there comfortably and I look at the siding that is falling away and think about the stories that were told around the pot bellied stove that probably sat in the middle of the floor. I have decided to paint this entire series with a limited palette of five colors. Burnt Umber, Ultramarine Blue, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Yellow Pale and Flake White. Seems to be working well and I can supplement with the occasional spot of color as needed.

Buffalo Barn

The Forks of Buffalo is a crossroads outside of Lexington Virginia where I found this old barn. It is already to a large extent abandoned and is showing signs of neglect.
There are several interesting aspects to this barn. First of all, in an area where Gambrel style barns prevail, the distinct architecture of this barn really stands out. Secondly, the exterior is finished in stucco which is extremely unusual. And lastly, the roof is slate which is probably the most expensive roofing material that could be used. I have no way of knowing how old this barn is, but with a little care, it probably could last another 100 years.
This is a small painting (9"x12") and is typical of what I'm working on now- small studies that allow me to work through painting ideas rapidly.

Marc Delessio

Just came across the artwork of Marc Delessio- he's an American painter living and working in Florence who travels the world making landscape paintings. I was there scouting for painting ideas and came across this beast. I took pictures from several angles and ended up liking this frontal view the most. I'm not sure I'll use it for a painting although it is hard to resist. All that rusting metal and aging paint make for a lot of great textures. I'm kind of thinking about doing it as a watercolor and finally putting my new Kolinsky watercolor brushes to use.

Trekell Brushes Featured Artist

For the month of March, I am the featured artist on the Trekell Brushes website. Trekell manufactures top-quality brushes for artists and sells them through their website at extremely reasonable prices. I've been using them for years after another artist recommended that I try them and they're the only things on my palette right now. Great stuff. They supply both bristle and sable brushes in all sizes and shapes. I particularly like the filbert sables in a wide variety of sizes.

I recently bought some of the Kolinsky watercolor sables and they are amazing. When I first went away to art school, my painting instructor insisted that we use Windsor and Newton Series 7 brushes for all our paintings and these Trekell brushes match them in every way except for the exorbitant price. Some of my new brushes haven't even been unwrapped as I admire their craftsmanship so much that I can't even bring myself to use them. I'm planning to start a piece that will give me the opportunity to use them for the first time and I can't wait to get started.

Check out the archive of featured artists on the Trekell site and you'll see one of my favorite artists, William Whitaker. His figure paintings of beautiful young women are quite graceful and show a tremendous amount of brush control and seamless painting skills. Beautiful stuff.

Taj Mahal- Chevrolet

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdHTNAxNfZI

Taj Mahal is the real thing y'all...

Silent Gathering

The most recent of my latest group of paintings, it was also the largest. It depicts a forest scene in Powhatan County along the banks of Fine Creek in a place known as the Foundry. The property contains a large stone building with 3 foot thick stone walls that was originally built in 1816 to manufacture arms and munitions for the Federal Government. After years of disuse, it was acquired by the artist Julian Binford and his wife who undertook a massive reconstruction of the old stone buildings which they eventually occupied. In the 1980s the property was acquired by a group of investors who set out to create the only true golf-only facility in the area. It is now one of the most exclusive golf courses in the Richmond area and I have been apprehended and escorted out of the property during my numerous attempts to visit it and photograph its breathtaking views. The one seen here is near the front of the property adjacent to Huguenot Trail or Virginia highway 711. There is a single light source emanating from one of the many stone outbuildings associated with the course. Fine Creek meanders through the center of the painting and the trees seem to lean in towards one another as if they are gathering to discuss their plans for the day. I hope someday to play this exclusive course- I just have to meet the right person who can give me access to its many hidden secrets. One of the notable historic facts about the area is that part of the property was owned at one time by Robert E. Lee's brother who invited the general to bivouac there on his way home to Richmond from Appomattox where he had surrendered to the Northern Armies. An historic marker records the event.

Winter Morning

Today I'm taking a look at the second of my recent paintings.

"Winter Morning" is an unusual image. It depicts an empty in-ground pool that has some years on it. It is the centerpiece of a beautiful Gillette garden that is part of a farm currently owned and run by one of my patrons and his family. While I was there I took a ton of pics and made notes which I turned to for this painting. There is a tall serpentine brick wall that runs around the garden which is filled with some of the finest, healthiest boxwoods I've ever seen. Just beyond the wall is the smaller house that is depicted in this painting. It is now a rented duplex, but was probably at one time home to the hired help that was there to assist in running the farm. The whole image has a mysterious, Hitchcock kind of feel to it with the barren tree in the middle ground reaching across the house towards the horizon in the distance. Because the pool is empty, it becomes more sculpture than pool and I am fascinated by the oval steps that take on the appearance of a wedding cake. The cast shadow that surrounds the area of light in the foreground is the result of the winter morning light hitting the edge of the pool. The leaves that are left there create their own little shadows and give dimension to the pool floor beneath them. I added the garden gate from another part of the estate and drew it with the gate ajar in order to allow the eyes and the imaginations of the viewer to pass through the imposing dark shape of the brick and boxwood wall to the yard that lies beyond.

One of the most interesting things about this farm is that it lies adjacent to Shirley Plantation, one of the best known of the many historic estates along the Route 5 corridor. I spent some time at the plantation after I finished up at the Nordt farm and will share a photo of Shirley in a subsequent post.

Getting Started

So, I've decided to start a blog to track the progress of my paintings and share the process with others. I look forward to being able to look back at the blog as a kind of personal journal that may become a way of gaining insight into my own work process.

I've just completed three major paintings and delivered them to The Glave Kocen Gallery. The paintings are now hanging and are being shown tonight at a fundraiser for the Richmond Symphony. These paintings are the result of my work over the past several months and are being added to my website this week.

The painting shown here is entitled "Distant Echoes" and is an image taken from Richmond's Maymont Park, a Victorian manor house and park that was built by industrialist James Dooley in the late 19th Century. It shows a decaying marble and iron gazebo that overlooks the lower portion of the park which contains the oriental gardens. The gazebo is an echo of a past era when lovers met there to talk and express their affections. The landscape suggests a distant river bank where the words and thoughts could echo back to the viewer. The ornate ironwork of the top of the gazebo is particularly intriguing and has held up well over the years. One of my favorite recent paintings.
